Pharmaceutical Industry

Pharmaceutical Industry was almost non existent when we attained freedom. Today we have more than 1000 Pharmaceutical manufacturing units. We have sufficient production of Pharmaceutical formulation to meet the demand of the country. We also manufacture large numbers of bulk drugs and import some. We are not only meeting our country demand but also are exporting drugs to about 120 countries. Globally we stand 3rd in volume of production of drugs and 14th in value. Growth of the industry on an average has been @ 14% approx.

Some of the factors attribtation growths are:

  • Increase in domestic demand
  • Rise in outsourcing activities.
  • Growth in healthcare financing like health insurance policy, cashless schemes
  • Demand in generic markets
  • 100% FDI under automatic route in the Pharma sector.

By 2015, prescription drugs worth about $300 billion are expected to go off patent which can be provide a great opportunity to India as we possesses excellent capacity and strength in generics

Strength

  • Low cost of innovation / manufacturing / capex cost / expenditure to run a GMP compliant facilutyprovedn record in designing high tech manufacturing facilities.
  • Excellent regularity compliance capabilities
  • Successful track record in circumventing API / formulation patent.
  • Low cost scientific pool on shop floor
  • Emerging hub for contracts research, biotechnology, clinical trials, clinical data management

All the same, there are some challenges that the Pharmaceutical Industry face

Major Challenges

  • Impact of general agreement and Tariff GATT and TRIPS will have an adverse effect on pricing of drugs
  • Transfer of technology from abroad will be difficulty and expensive
  • New DPCO has within it ambit a large number of drugs which will bring so the profitability of Pharmaceutical companies which in turn will adversely affect expansion and R&D facilities
